Keeping the
boundary intact.
A membrane is under attack every second — from oxygen, inflammation, and its own high metabolism. Integrity is not a given. It's a balance, fought and re-fought all day long.
The brain burns about a fifth of your body's oxygen while sitting still. That metabolic intensity is also its vulnerability: oxygen produces reactive by-products — free radicals — that tear at the very lipids the membrane is made of. The process has a name: lipid peroxidation. Left unchecked, it stiffens membranes, corrupts signalling, and accelerates aging.
Integrity is a balance, not a state.
Think of integrity as a running score: damage on one side, repair and protection on the other. Small daily habits move the needle more than any single dramatic intervention.
Every factor below is a lever. Protective inputs push integrity up; stressors pull it down. The membrane keeps score continuously.
- +Omega-3 intake (DHA)Rebuilds fluid, resilient membranes
- +Antioxidant defencesVitamin E, glutathione intercept free radicals
- +Deep sleepClears metabolic waste, restores repair
- –Chronic inflammationSustains oxidative pressure on lipids
- –Oxidative stressDrives lipid peroxidation of the bilayer
What actually breaks a membrane.
Membrane damage is rarely one big event. It's the slow accumulation of small hits — the kind that never announce themselves until function starts to slip.
Lipid peroxidation
Free radicals rip electrons from unsaturated fatty tails, setting off a chain reaction that damages lipid after lipid down the membrane.
Neuro-inflammation
Persistently activated immune cells in the brain flood the environment with oxidants and disrupt the lipid environment of the synapse.
Metabolic stress
High glucose and poor energy handling glycate and stiffen membranes, blunting the fluidity that signalling depends on.
The membrane also heals.
Integrity isn't only about avoiding harm — the brain actively rebuilds. Damaged lipids are cleaved out and replaced with fresh ones; antioxidant enzymes neutralise radicals before they spread; and a steady supply of the right dietary fats keeps new, high-quality membrane rolling off the line.
SMX frames this as an ongoing renovation. You can't stop the wear — but you can keep the crew well supplied.
Now scale integrity across a lifetime.
Damage and repair play out over decades. The final pillar looks at what happens to the membrane as we age — and what keeps a mind sharp into old age.
